ANONYMOUS (1887?)

This portrait of an elder of the community is typical of the period in that the white

bonnet at the temple signify the rules of engagement with war and amnesia. Her husband,

the church pastor, died in battle with his pen between his teeth, attempting to get his wife

to remember his name, his love of the countryside. Her white lace collar is now in the

collection’s holdings, filed under: ornament.
