Kim Schoen's work in photography, film and drawing engages
re-enactment and repetition, exploring the concept of repetition as
the site or force that disrupts and reveals. Her interest in the
intersection of image and language lies in a fascination with lyrical
language, as Deleuze describes, "in which every term is irreplaceable
and can only be repeated." She received her M.F.A. in photography
from CalArts in 2005 and her Masters in Philosophy from the
photography department at The Royal College of Art in London in 2008.
Recent exhibitions of her work include A Series of Catastrophes and
Celebrations (solo show, Los Angeles), Beyond Image: Photography and
Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), Body/City (Dublin), and Anxiety of
Influence: The Wight Biennial at UCLA. Her work has been written about
in the Los Angeles Times, X-Tra Quarterly for Contemporary Art, and
Art in America. Kim was selected for the Artist Pension Trust in Los
Angeles, and is one of the founding editors of the MATERIAL, a journal
of texts by visual artists.
